HIV/AIDS CARE & PrEP PREVENTION SERVICES

What is HIV?

HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. It weakens a person’s immune system by destroying important cells that fight disease and infection. There is currently no effective cure for HIV. But with proper medical care, HIV can be controlled.

Who can get HIV?

HIV can impact anyone and is not specific to race, gender, religions, or sexual preferences. However, the risks of contracting HIV increases with certain lifestyles and behaviors. This is the reason the Centers for Prevention & Disease Control (CDC) recommends everyone ages 13-64 be tested at least annually (once per year).

How is HIV transmitted?

HIV can be transmitted through anal or vaginal sex, or sharing needles, syringes, or other drug injection equipment (for example, cookers),or being in contact with contaminated blood (for example, blood transfusions though this transmission route is rare now due to screening and testing measures in place).

How will I know if I have HIV ?

The first step is to GET AN HIV TEST.

  • If your test result is positive, you need to start care immediately with a provider because you can take medicine to treat the virus. HIV treatment reduces the amount of HIV in your blood (viral load). Taking HIV treatment as prescribed can make the viral load so low that a test can’t detect it (undetectable viral load). Getting and keeping an undetectable viral load (or staying virally suppressed) is the best way to stay healthy and protect others.
  • If your test result is negative, you can take action to prevent HIV. Starting Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis also known as (PrEP) will help to reduce your risk of contracting HIV and Post Exposure Prophylaxis (also known as PEP) can help treat other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) that can increase your risk of exposure to HIV. In addition, abstinence (not having sex), never sharing needles, and using condoms the right way every time you have sex can be additional strategies used to reduce your HIV risk.

What preventative options are available?

Starting Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis also known as (PrEP) that comes in Oral and Injectable medication options (APRETUDE, DESCOVY, or TRUVADA) will help to reduce your risk of contracting HIV.

Post Exposure Prophylaxis (also known as PEP) can help treat other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) that can increase your risk of exposure to HIV.
